The Best Over-the-Counter Skincare Products of 2022
When it comes to skincare there are so many amazing products out there. While I definitely stand behind the medical-grade skincare products I recommend and use, remember “medical-grade” is a marketing term not a legal definition. We all have different budgets and skincare needs. If you don’t have any serious skin concerns then you probably don’t need a prescription product. You can get some amazing products OTC, at your local Boots or off Amazon!
This is my rundown of all my favourite OTC products that I used this year.
Lacura Caviar Day & Night Cream
I really stand by this moisturiser. Th best part is that you can pick it up at any local Aldi!
I’ve been using it since 2017, and I’m shocked there’s not more buzz around it and it’s not a cult product.
It is bea-u-ti-ful and gives my skin hydration and softness like very few other creams ever have. It have a very luxurious and creamy feel, which is something that I prefer.
Clinisoothe+ Skin Purifier
I have waxed lyrical about this product and the power of hypochlorous acid (HOCl). It is no wonder the you can find the professional version of this, Clinisept, in every aesthetic clinic in the UK.
This skin purifier is anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, and all-around powerhouse to protect your skin. It is great for a multitude of skin concerns, including acne and rosacea. It’s a great little extra to spritz onto your skin after a cleanse or to carry around during the day to keep your face fresh, especially if wearing a mask!
CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser
I love, love, love CeraVe and this is my favourite product of theirs. For thosewho don’t know, CeraVe is a dermatologist recommended brand and focuses on ceramides and protecting the skin. It’s a great option for those with sensitive or dehydrated skin, or with skin barrier issues.
Cleansers are complex and sophisticated skincare products and they should be used, but they don’t have to break the bank. This is a great option.
Altruist Sunscreen
This is a high quality dermatologist-founded brand that is low cost and protective. The primary goal of this brand is around skin cancer education and prevention, which I can get behind!
I’ve said it thousands of times - I want you to use sunscreen properly which means slathering it on so it’s actually benefiting you. The problem with a lot of the really expensive sunscreens is that people don’t apply the properly due to the cost. The core benefit from sunscreen is not just the anti-ageing aspect, it is the fact it is preventing skin cancer.
La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Balm
This is a classic product that is beloved by many. It is a great all-around moisturiser cream that can be used anywhere - face, hands, lips, legs. It’s even gentle enough to use on baby’s skin! It can be used as a skin protectant, and goes on smoothly without feeling tacky or greasy.
This is just a staple to keep around, particularly in the winter months. It’s the company’s best seller for a reason.
Nursem Caring Skin Fix
This hand cream is wonderful for anyone who has dry, cracked skin from frequent handwashing. It’s effective and inexpensive, full of avocado oil, shea, and glycerin.
I love the message behind this company as well. It was founded by nurses, and for every product bought a free month of skincare is give to a nurse or midwife.
Olay SPF 30 Day Cream
This classic cream is one that just lives in my yoga bag. I love being able to use it throughout the day and after a class as needed to keep my skin feeling soft, and also to top up my SPF protection.

You might have seen it all over the media recently - the EU is apparently banning retinol?! What is going on?
Well don't panic - retinol isn't disappearing completely! Instead, there are new rules that are going to regulate its percentages in cosmetic, over-the-counter products - and this does not apply to the use of these vitamin A derivatives (prescription retinoids) by healthcare professionals.
So let’s explore what’s happening.
